Step back in time to the gracious era of verandas, croquet, lemonade and canvas swings. Occident Island is a special private island with more than 100 years of St. Lawrence family history. Excellent swimming, sunning, canoeing, sailing, water-skiing and boating is all available on Occident, weather permitting, of course.

Imagine awakening in the morning to a sight like this . . .
What a way to start the day! The freighter behind the island above
is headed up river, and caused the first ripple of the day on a
glass-calm morning on the St. Lawrence.

If the morning scenery isn't enough to start your day right, a warm welcoming full breakfast in the main cottage surely will. Dine on our veranda as the morning sun warms your soul, and plan a day of excitement in the islands - or a day of quiet splendor on Occident. Even rainy days are fun on Occident, with old puzzles, Chinese checkers, and books, ready to be enjoyed in any weather. Arrangements can be readily made for fishing charters, antique boat rides, private island tours and picnics. There is also an abundance of things to do locally, including summertime plays, galleries, museums, unique shopping opportunities, and of course dinners and nightly entertainment. If adventure is in your plans when visiting the 1000 Islands, you'll want to visit TI Adventures, or Hunt Underwater. And for some of the finest dining in the 1000 Islands region, Foxy's Restaurant is our primary connection to the mainland. All the attractions in the Thousand Islands are just minutes away - up river to Clayton and Cape Vincent, around the Golden Crescent to Sackets Harbor, or downriver to Alexandria Bay.

Occident Island has been sharing the hospitality of a loving family since my Great Grandfather bought the island in 1900. Not much has changed since then.

Log books with original guest signatures and comments, dating back to the 1800s are a great source of interest, as are the old charts, photos, and paraphernalia. If you forget your bathing suit, no problem. We have plenty of old virgin wool suits dating back to the earliest of days.

On special occasions Great Grandfather Wilson would decorate the family launch with Japanese candle-lit lanterns, flags and flowers. We found the Japanese lanterns packed away in an old cupboard, like so many other old treasures here.

Come share these good old days with us and enjoy the present along with the treasures of the past.

You'll be staying upstairs in the boathouse, where you'll find two bedrooms, one large bedroom/sitting room with two double beds overlooking the magnificent St. Lawrence River, and a smaller private bedroom with yet another double bed. A private bathroom is provided, along with a microwave oven for light snacks and warm beverages. From your private deck you'll enjoy a splendid view of Rock Island Lighthouse, and a dozen other islands and shoals providing a new appreciation for sunrises and sunsets.

Downstairs is a refrigerator for cold drinks, ice, and other light provisions. You'll really appreciate the large walk-in shower and dressing room.

Fish from the boathouse dock or swim from the smooth granite shoreline of the island.

Explore the island shores in an early morning canoe ride as you build an appetite for breakfast, or paddle through a spectacular evening sunset.

Bring your own boat, rent one close by, or we'll be happy to provide transportation to and from the mainland. Either way, its only a two minute ride across some of the region's most scenic waters.

While staying at our Bed & Breakfast you'll surely want to sample the fine lunches and dinners served at many fine nearby restaurants.

Some of the most peaceful sleeping accommodations you've ever experienced are upstairs over the boathouse. One of our neighbors.

Before my Great Grandfather purchased the island, Occident was a private fishing lodge
and retreat where some of the well-to-do of the past century would
come to enjoy the spendor. Today it still serves as
a comfortable haven far away from a hectic world!

If your preference is to stay on the mainland,
for a day or two or longer, may I suggest my other property:
The Mulberry Cottage Bed & Breakfast,
located in the nearby village of Clayton.

Cancellation Policy:
Except in cases where accommodations are rebooked by another guest, there are no refunds on cancellations or early departures.
